The Bean Chest — Coffee Never Tasted So Good
Don't Let Coffee Beans Seal Your Fate.
I've heard of ships lost to storms, hidden rocks, and raging seas. But coffee beans? I never imagined coffee beans could help send a treasure ship to the bottom of the sea.
Then I discovered the story of the Vrouw Maria.
In 1771, the Dutch merchant ship sailed toward St. Petersburg with a remarkable cargo, including valuable paintings purchased for Catherine the Great. I can picture her crossing the Baltic, her crew dreaming of landfall, unaware that the most unlikely danger was already aboard.
During a storm off the Finnish coast, she struck rocks and began taking on water. Her crew fought for days to keep her afloat. But according to the captain's own account, coffee beans from the cargo swirled into the bilge pumps and clogged them. The men couldn't clear the water fast enough. The Vrouw Maria sank, taking much of her treasure with her.
The rocks wounded her. The coffee beans helped seal her fate.
I had to read that twice. And when I learned that the wreck was finally found in 1999, with coffee beans still among its remains, I couldn't stop thinking about the strange journey those beans had taken. Imagine being surrounded by precious art and luxury goods, only to discover that the humblest cargo held the most unforgettable story.
Maybe that's why I was drawn to this little wooden chest. The dark wood, the metal bands, the old-fashioned latch and lock. It looks like the sort of thing someone might have carried home from a long voyage. I lift the lid, tuck a sealed bag of my favorite coffee beans inside, and suddenly an ordinary morning feels a little less ordinary.
When I open The Bean Chest — Coffee Never Tasted So Good, I'm not hunting for an empress's lost paintings. I'm looking for the small pleasure waiting inside: fresh beans ready for the grinder, the promise of a slow brew, and a few quiet minutes that belong entirely to me.
The Vrouw Maria's voyage ended with coffee beans.
Mine begins with them.
