The Flying Belgian in Motion — Included in this bundle in the gold finish.

Lost at Sea. Found in the Flame.

It began with a shipwreck I couldn't get out of my head. In 1771, the Dutch merchant ship Vrouw Maria struck rocks in the Baltic Sea while carrying paintings destined for Catherine the Great. Reading the captain's account, I imagined myself on her deck, boots slipping on wet boards, cold spray stinging my face, men shouting below as water flooded the hold. They fought the pumps until coffee beans clogged them. The rocks had opened her hull; the beans helped seal her fate. I knew the ending, yet I found myself hoping they'd save her.

The question stayed with me: what made those ordinary little beans worth carrying across an ocean? The trail led me to Thomas Bruff, a dentist who patented a coffee mill in 1798 and later treated Thomas Jefferson. I pictured myself in his workshop, watching a wheel turn as fresh coffee scented the air. A dentist improving a machine for a drink that stained his patients' teeth. I smiled at the irony, then wondered when making coffee had stopped feeling like an occasion.

My search led next to a nineteenth-century balance-siphon brewer. I imagined leaning over an inventor's table as a flame warmed the glass, water climbed, and a delicate mechanism shifted under its own weight. I was suddenly aboard Captain Nemo's Nautilus, brass instruments gleaming beside portholes that looked out into black water. For a moment, I was the boy I'd once been, convinced that some marvelous discovery waited just beyond the next page.

What surprised me was how much I missed him. I'd spent years treating my mornings as something to get through, sipping coffee while my thoughts raced ahead to everything I had to do. I couldn't remember when I'd last been absorbed in something simply because it fascinated me. Somewhere along the way, I'd stopped searching for wonder because I'd stopped expecting to find it.

Then, in my own kitchen, I opened The Bean Chest and lifted out a sealed bag of coffee. I turned the wheel of The Daily Grind, listening to the beans break beneath it, then lit the flame under The Flying Belgian and watched the water rise through glass. Warmth and the smell of coffee filled the room, and I stayed until the last drop returned. I had called my search The Lost Art of Coffee — The Quest for the Perfect Brew. Only then did I understand what I'd really been hunting. I took my first sip, and for the first time in years, I felt that old sense of wonder again.
