I Used to Chase That Sound Down the Street
Now I'm the one riding toward whatever made somebody call for help.
I must've been six or seven the first time I remember hearing it. Wee woo. Wee woo. Wee woo. I'd drop whatever I was doing and run to the front window. Sometimes I'd make it outside just in time to see that big red fire truck come roaring around the corner. The lights. The siren. The guys hanging out the windows waving at us kids. Man, I wanted to be one of those guys. Funny thing is, I eventually got my wish.
I still remember my first real call. We were sitting around the firehouse table, giving each other a hard time about something I can't even remember now. Then the alarm went off. Chairs scraped across the floor. Somebody knocked over his coffee. Within seconds, we were pulling on our gear and climbing aboard. And there it was. That same siren I'd spent my childhood chasing. Only this time, I was inside the truck.
I wish I could tell you every call gets easier. Some do. Some stay with you long after you've hung up your gear and gone home. But there's something about the guys you ride with. They know when to give you a hard time. They know when to leave you alone. And sometimes, when you've had the kind of shift nobody wants to talk about, somebody says something so ridiculously stupid that the whole room starts laughing. You'd be surprised how much you need those moments.
Somewhere along the way, somebody started calling us the Wee Woo Squad. I have no idea who started it. Probably the same idiot who keeps hiding everybody's coffee mugs. But it stuck. And honestly, I kind of love it.
Because underneath all the joking, there's a crew of people I'd trust with my life. I've seen what they're made of when things get ugly. I've watched them give everything they've got for complete strangers. And tomorrow morning, we'll probably be back at that same table, arguing about who makes the worst coffee. That's the firehouse for you.
I still smile sometimes when I hear a kid yelling, "Fire truck!" as we roll past. I know exactly how he feels.
The Wee Woo Crew — When Duty Calls. For the ones who grew up loving the sound, and the ones who eventually answered it.
