The True Hopeful — Even in the Dark
No Answers. No Guarantees. Still a Reason to Hope.
I sat in the driveway for forty-three minutes with the engine off and my hands locked around the steering wheel. I'd lost my job that afternoon. Twenty years of early mornings, missed birthdays, and telling myself that if I worked hard enough, we'd be safe. It took one conversation to make all of it feel worthless. Through the kitchen window I could see the light above the table. My wife's car was there. Our son's bike lay on the lawn. I couldn't figure out how to walk inside and say, "I don't know what happens next."
When I finally opened the door, my wife asked why I was so late. I tried to answer and nothing came out. I hated that more than losing the job. I hated watching her face change as she realized something was wrong. "They let me go," I said. She didn't offer a speech or tell me everything would be fine. She pulled out a chair. We sat there for a long time, staring at each other across the bills piled on the table.
After everyone went to bed, I turned on an old episode of Richmond. I'd watched those matches before. Usually I laughed at Ted stumbling through English football and Roy Kent snarling at anyone who came too close. That night I saw something else. Ted was trying to hold other people together while quietly coming apart himself. Jamie was learning how hard it was to admit he'd been wrong. Richmond kept taking hits, and nobody could tell them when—or whether—their luck would change. I knew that feeling so well it hurt.
The yellow BELIEVE sign came into view. I'd always loved it. But sitting alone in the dark, I didn't feel brave or inspired. I felt frightened. I couldn't even promise my family we'd be okay. And yet, for the first time that night, I understood that I didn't have to be certain to keep going. I just had to be there when morning came.
That's what I remember when I pull on The True Hopeful — Even in the Dark, that black Richmond jersey with a name across the back. It doesn't remind me of a miraculous victory. It reminds me of filling out applications at the kitchen table the next morning, still terrified, still embarrassed, but no longer hiding in the car.
Hope didn't give me the answers. It got me out of the driveway.
