Against All Odds. One Team. A Million Reasons to Believe.
I remember laughing when Ted Lasso first arrived at Richmond. An American football coach in the middle of English football, smiling his way through a sport he barely understood. The supporters were furious. The players weren't convinced. And I was sitting there thinking what everyone else was thinking. This wasn't going to end well. But something about that ridiculous little club kept bringing me back, week after week, even when winning seemed like the last thing anyone expected.
I found myself caring about people I'd never met in a place I'd never been. Roy Kent, fighting to accept that his greatest playing days were behind him. Jamie Tartt, slowly discovering that being the best player on the pitch meant nothing if you couldn't become a better man. Sam Obisanya, standing up for what he believed in, and Dani Rojas, whose infectious joy could make even the darkest afternoon feel a little brighter. They made me laugh, frustrated the hell out of me, and somehow became people I genuinely cared about.
I still remember the heartbreak of relegation. That sinking feeling as the final whistle blew, knowing there was nothing left to do but accept what had happened. I wanted to be angry. I wanted to blame somebody. Instead, I found myself hurting right along with them. And when Richmond began fighting its way back, I was there for every impossible comeback, every nervous moment, and every celebration that had me jumping off the couch like I'd scored the winning goal myself.
Through it all, there was that little yellow sign hanging above the locker room door. BELIEVE. At first, it seemed almost childish. But the longer I watched, the more those six letters meant to me. They weren't just about winning matches. They were about forgiveness, second chances, friendship, and believing in people when nobody else would. Somewhere between the laughter and the heartbreak, I'd become a true believer myself.
That's why The True Believer — More Than a Match means so much more to me than another red and blue jersey. Those colors bring back the faces, the friendships, the unforgettable moments, and a football club that somehow found its way into my heart. Whether I'm wearing Kent, Tartt, Rojas, Obisanya, or another Richmond favorite, I'm carrying memories that go far beyond anything that happened on the pitch.
Because Richmond taught me something I'll never forget. Sometimes the greatest victories aren't measured by the final score. They're measured by the people who stand beside you, the obstacles you overcome, and the courage to keep believing when the whole world expects you to fail.
And that's why, for me, it was always more than a match.
