I used to lie outside and stare at the stars until my neck hurt. I didn't know the names of most of them, and I couldn't begin to understand how far away they were. I just knew there was something out there bigger than the little world I understood. I'd look into that darkness and wonder where it ended, what was beyond it and whether someday I'd live long enough to find out. I think that's the feeling The Starward brought back to me the first time I saw that deep blue face.

When I was young, space felt like the place where impossible things happened. I watched rockets shake the ground as they climbed into the sky. I watched astronauts leave Earth and the Space Shuttle disappear into a blue sky carrying people somewhere I could barely comprehend. I imagined what it would feel like to look through a window and see the whole world below me. For a kid staring at the stars, there was no limit to how far life might go.

Then I grew up.

Somewhere between work, bills, raising a family, disappointments, responsibilities and simply trying to get through another week, I stopped looking up as much. Maybe that's what happens to most of us. The universe doesn't become any less extraordinary. Life just becomes louder. The kid who wondered about everything gets buried underneath the adult who has somewhere to be tomorrow morning.

That's why The Starward means something different to me. The blue face and stainless steel mesh have this unmistakable feeling of the future, but when I look at it, strangely enough, it takes me backward. Back to a time when I could stare into the night and believe there was something incredible waiting beyond everything I could see.

And maybe that kid wasn't wrong.

I've lived long enough to watch things I once thought belonged to science fiction become real. We've walked on another world, explored Mars, discovered planets around distant stars and built machines capable of seeing light that began traveling toward us billions of years ago. After all these years, the universe has somehow become even bigger than I imagined.

Sometimes I still walk outside at night and look up. For a moment, the bills don't matter. Tomorrow doesn't matter. I'm that kid again, staring into something impossibly large and wondering what we'll discover next.

That's what I want on my wrist.

The Starward — The Future Is Out There.
